The pattern is from a German (!) knitting magazine (Stricktrends) and I loved it at first sight. And I had the right yarn in my stash: Bamboo Soft of Rowan Yarns in this beautiful shade of blue. It has a wonderful drape of the ruffles which come from the cables above. Back and front are already finished and I am working on the first sleeve now.
Sommerstricken. Bis bald

Die Farbe Lila ... / The colour purple ...
... is absolutely trendy this fall and so it is also a must-have for me. Finally I could destash a bit by knitting something with the yarn Tusshena of Lana Grossa which I have for about two years until now. I wanted to make this cardigan for several years. It is a pattern from a Gedifra Highlights magazine which is several years old. The pieces are ready now, they only have to be washed, blocked and sewed together. Knitting the cardigan was not really much fun because of only knit and purl with 3,5 mm needles. But the yarn is lovely and has a wonderful shimmer.
Then I casted on another "Back-to-School-Vest" in the trendy colour. It is Kid Classic of Rowan in the colour lavender ice of which I have 6 balls in my stash. Wonderful yarn, wonderful vest.
And another project in the trendy colour, here a bit more berry:
This should be a jacket for my niece Hannah. She will soon be 8 years old, wears a lot of purple garments and wanted to have a jacket made by her aunt. No problem for me! The yarn is "Flamme" of Junghans Wolle, made of 100 % polyacryl but it is cosy and not squeezy, if you know what I mean. With 10mm needles I have a very good chance to finish the gift by the time of Hannah's birthday. I think the yarn is the right for her because of allergies against wool.
Last but not least here is a project in another colour which is timeless. Fans will recognize immediately that it is "Martha" of Rowan Studio 2. I ordered the original yarn for this, it is Felted Tweed of Rowan in the colour midnight. The yarn is a dream, so soft and a pleasure to knit with.
Susanne
So, that's it for today, tomorrow we start again to the Baltic Sea to sail for the last time of this year and then take our ship out of the water in order to make it ready for the winter. Cross fingers we'll have good weather.
Until then best wishes

Urlaubsgestricksel / Holiday Knits
I finished the last pieces of my shell tank on our journey to the coast and did the sewing and the rest after the four weeks of sailing. I made little modifications according to my personal measurements because I needed the tank a little longer and didn't want the swing shape like Norah designed the tank. So what above looks like somewhat waistshaping is really nothing but straight edgings as you can see in the next picture. I am totally satisfied with this tank because it fits to my shapes very well and the pointed hem flatters the figure. I didn't admit that I would like such an asymmetrical garment so much because I normally love symmetry. So sometimes one had to try something else, he? This tank make heads turn, that's true!
During our holidays I really knitted only two pairs of socks. I didn't really want to start something big although I had a big tote with the turquoise yarn for the cable sweater on board.
The first pair of socks is for me and made of Meilenweit Cotton Fondo of Lana Grossa, colour 6504, size 41-42. The yarn was a present of the Lana Grossa Seasonstore when I ordered something there. Fresh colours, he?
And this is Regia Galaxy, colour ocean (No. 1557), Size 44, für my sweetheart. He is always very glad when he gets a new pair of self-knitted socks from me. The zigzags are very crazy - I only say: computerwool ... but faishy.
And now I have this here on my needles:
It is "Ripples" of Kim Hargreaves summer collection "Nectar" out of Bamboo Soft of Rowan. Actually I'll make it without sleeves because I only have 9 balls of this wonderful charcoal which I got at a sale. The yarn knits up very well, it is totally soft and has a wonderful shimmer that unfortunately cannot be shown in a photo.
Eure Susanne
In these days the knitting magazines for the coming autumn come out and so I have to study a lot now. Have much fun with your magazines by choosing favourite patterns. The cold season comes faster than one might think.
Blessings,

Maschenproben / Swatching
So, nun aber wieder zum Stricken:
Well, again something about knitting:
I am swatching. Which yarn for which project? Does the swatch match? Does it look good? Do I understand the pattern? And so on ...
I'd like to find a project to take with me on holidays. That means it must not be ready after a few days, the pattern should be somewhat challenging, it should be fun to knit and should fit to summer. Well, I could take a few projects with me but space is limited on our ship. Here are my attempts:
Cotton Raglan from "Cables Untangled" by Melissa Leapman, Yarn New Cotton Lino by Lana Grossa - this is my favourite for the holidays - perhaps because of the fresh colour or because the pattern reminds me of anchor chains?
Hex Coat from "Knitting Nature" by Norah Gaughan, yarn Rowan Summer Tweed. I love the hexagons from the very first moment I had that book in my hands. Knitting the Spiral Scarf of this book was fun so I think I will make this coat but not as long as in the pattern. I like to knit a shorter cardigan. The swatch matches to the instructions in the pattern but - I think it would be a little boring knitting moss stitch all the time in my holidays. That's something I can do at home watching TV at the same time, I think.
Shell Tank again from "Knitting Nature" by Norah Gaughan, yarn Lana Grossa "Dito". I bought it last year at my LYS without having a certain project in mind. But for this pattern it is the right yarn, the swatch matches perfectly and the yarn is so soft and drapes well. I will change the shape of the tank a bit but that comes later. Again, this project will not come with me on our holidays because the center cable panel ist ready yet and I have begun the back already.
Here a little peek on my current knitting project which has to be made up now. Should be ready before the holidays.
It is "Granite" of the latest Rowan magazine which I knit with a cotton blend named "Punto" by Schachenmayr from my stash. The colour is a wonderful shade of blue and the yarn is so soft - knitting with it is much fun although it is just stockinette. I wonder how it will fit because I made some modifications in shaping. But more about that next time.
Bis dahin liebe Grüße und strickt schön

Happy knitting until then

Frühling / Spring

Finally spring seems to come to Brandenburg. Bumble-bees are humming through my tiny garden and here and there some flowers look through the wakening green.
Unfortunately I had a lot of work in the last weeks and therefore I were not in the mood to post something here. And of course there was the hurt in my knitter's ellbows which had to recover from that little bit too much of knitting. Thank you all for your good wishes and your lovely comments on my Klaralund sweater. Thanks to the cold weather in the last weeks so I could wear it very often.
Nevertheless here is something I would like to show some things I've knitted though:
At first there is my back-to-school-vest from the book "Fitted Knits" by Stefanie Japel. I didn't make the focused increases for the bust shaping because Mother Nature has epuiped me very well in this section, so I don't want a focus on that. I made the increases in the first round of the waffle-stitch-section of the vest but only in the front of the garment. And I knitted seed-stitch instead of waffle-stitch. As you can see in the picture it fits very well. The yarn was "Look" of Junghans Wolle, 115m/50gr, 4,5mm needles. Today the vest had its premiere in the office. I think I should knit one more.
Then I knitted the first arm of another Klaralund sweater with Mille Colori of Lang Yarns. The colours are much more beautiful in real as in the picture. The mixture of sand, creme and several shades of blue remind me of the shore and sea. It will be probably too warm in the next weeks so I will wear the sweater not before the late summer or autumn but there is only one arm ready yet. So I began something springlike with this:
A lacy sweater out of a laceweight mohair from Schachenmayr, a yarn named "Hair". I knit with 5mm needles. The yarn belongs to my stash already a few years. I bought it when Illbruck Challenge won the Volvo Ocean Race (sailors know what I am speaking of) because I was frantic about the smashing applegreen which was the colour of that syndicate. Normally green is not my favourite colour but with this I'm ready to take a little risk. I love it.
The next project should be "Martha" from Rowan and - instead of the fact that my stash is still large - I ordered felted tweed in this wonderful dark blue. I saw "Martha" in so many of your blogs so I have to knit one myself. It seems to be a must-have this season. The colour is really like the shade in the picture, a dark blue that is shining beautifully. I'm looking for the finishing of the lacy green sweater in order to begin with my "Martha" as soon as possible.

Winter zum Frühlingsanfang / Winter at the Beginning of Spring
On thursday and friday it looked like this in the Lausitz, it was a fairytale of winter at the beginning of spring. Meanwhile the snow smelt so there will be no white easter at all. We enjoy the free days and our cosy home.
So I'll take time to show you my knitting of the last days. Barbara and Suzi already wanted to know what happened with the crazy knee highs and here is the outcome:
This is only one sock and it will be the only one in future. It all went a little bit wrong with this project, so I'll take it as an experiment. I first started with the given number of stitches, knitted about 30 cm and then tried to slip through with my foot. But I didn't manage to get my heel through the Fair-Isle-Border at the bottom of the sock. My first attempt went then to the rubbish, grrrr!! So I tried a second attempt with a few stitches more on the needles. At the calf I had to increase some more stitches as in the pattern because my gauge of the chess pattern needs more stitches than given in the pattern. At the top I decreased a lot and brought it to an end. Then I knitted the foot of the sock. I didn't make the embroidery.
Result of this experiment:
I won't knit a second sock like this, the first is too big, almost an overknee. The weight of the yarn and the doubled strings of the chess pattern don't make a slim leg (lol). I think I'll take the sock for christmas or to save my money.
If I would knit these socks again I would leave out the chess pattern in the middle section and knit with only one colour. So the embroidery will look much better, I think. The socks wouldn't be so crazy, but that will be okay.
I finshed my ribbed sweater with the shaping cable knot about a week ago and I wore it several times since then. The making-of was also a little bit troubled. First I had to do some maths because my gauge didn't fit to the pattern, then I wanted to match the ribbing of the arms and the body, so again a little bit work. In the end it all fits very well.
It was a pleasure to work with the yarn Merino-Kaschmir of Schoeller and Stahl but after washing the sweater was somewhat limpy that I was shocked at first. The sweater now is about 4 cm longer than before. God thanks I made it very short! I am not sure yet but I think the yarn will pill very fast - so what! I'm very satisfied with the boat neck because my thyroid scar is hidden behind it without wearing a turtle neck. For cold days I will make a loose turtleneck out of the three balls left from this yarn. Here is a picture of the finished sweater. You can find another modeled picture in my gallery 2008:
On thursday I started with a new project: A Klaralund sweater from Cornelia Tuttle-Hamilton. I saw Maartje's Klaralund and after my Noro-Scarf I wanted more colours. But Noro would be too expensive for me for Klaralund, so I looked for an alternative yarn. I found it with "Mille Colori" of Lang Yarns and I am amazed about that yarn. It is simple twisted of wool and artificial fibers, has beautiful colours with a shimmery sheen that change very softly and randomly. It is very soft and the best is: it costs only a third of Noro! I bought this yarn at ebay. It is a mixture of bright red, purple, orange, rust, blue, seagreen and mahogany brown - simply beautiful, come and have an look:
The colours come randomly. Each ball has an own variety of colours. This yarn is really not what I call "computer-wool", a yarn where the colours come regularly. I am just so amazed about this yarn that I ordered two more colours which will come next week per mail. So be aware: Like Noro this yarn can cause addiction!!
With these pictures I wish you happy easter-days

First I wish to thank all of you for your praising comments on "Fyne" which surprised me much and made me very happy. It amused me that Cécile and Monika found my husband's red shirt worth mentioning. Yes, it's right, the colour red is my favourite and he likes wearing it, too.
Barbara was also right, that I didn't indicate the yarn I used for my "Fyne". For whom this is interesting please read the 13th comment on the "Fyne"-post where I leave a supplement. I promise to do better in future but I forgot it after making all the entries in Ravelry to "Fyne". After that this topic was closed for me. Sorry.
After sitting in the wonderful spring sun last weekend now the storm is roaring round the house and rain is drumming against the windows. It isn't as strong as they said in the weather forecast yet and I hope it will remain like it is now.
Unlike the most people I love such stormy days - it is so cosy at home then. This cheese cake is ready yet and will be cut this afternoon with tea and rum and candlelight.
My sweetheart is playing some records of Neil Young and we remember the Neil Young concert of his Continental Tour 2008 which we visited last tuesday in the ICC in Berlin. It was really a gorgeous and unforgetable event.
Hier ist also zunächst mal mein "mindless knitting project".
Blogging, have a peek at all the other blogs of you knitting artists and commenting here and there, knitting by myself and planning new projects are also a big part of such a cosy weekend like this.
Here is my mindless knitting project of which I thought a few days before. The pattern is from an old Gedifra Highlights magazine. I've knitted the sweater already a few years before in white and I still love the design. The shaping only comes from the cable knot, nothing more has to be done to shape the body. I will alter the collar, I think I'll make a simple boat neck.
The yarn is "Merino Kaschmir" of Schoeller & Stahl which is a wonderful soft mixture of 72 % virgin wool, 15 % polyamide and 13 % cashmere with a yardage of 100 m per 50 gr. With 6mm needles you are very fast.
Well and then I want to make the "embroidered knee highs" of Kristin Nicholas which are in the Vogue Knitting magazine of fall 2006. They are supercool, aren't they? Because it's difficult to get the original yarn I will substitute it again with "Melange" of Junghans-Wolle. It has the right weight and the right colours. I think I will cast them on today.
Eure Susanne
The picture remembers of easter, doesn't it? Well, easter isn't far away yet. But march should be much colder than february this year, they said. Perhaps I can wear the knee highs even this spring, we will see.
I wish all of you a relaxed and cosy weekend on which you will be safe from gale "Emma".
Love,
yours Susanne

"Fyne" in Arbeit / "Fyne" in progress
Hello dear readers,
first I wish to say thank you for all the nice comments to my last post which made me very happy.
Today I only want to show two things:
First the update to "Fyne" for my sweetheart ...
... hier noch eine Nahaufnahme ...
... here a closer shot ...
Second this wonderful sunset which we could watch this evening from our home:

The first butterfly this year ?
I've begun this little guy here a few days ago and finished it today. It should be a gift for our youngest niece who we will see in a couple of days for the first time.
In Ravelray I discovered the wonderful little bees, beetles and butterflies crotcheted by Mia and I wanted to make something similar - so I improvised my butterfly. It is not as cute as Mia's but I am satisfied with the outcome of this attempt. Body, head, arms, legs and feelers are knitted, the wings are crotcheted. The arms, legs and feelers are filled with tobacco pipe cleaners (from my beloved husband), the wings are fixed on cardboard in order to firm them.
This butterfly is no toy indeed, it should be hung on the wall or at the window.
I still work upon my variation of the cardigan Emmeline, the second arm will be finsihed soon and then it will be blocked. I will show some pictures when the seems are closed and the borders added.
I will close the shoulder seems with knitting them together. I've made the body a little bit wider and longer in order to fit better to my measurements, so I will need ca. 350 gr of Luxor.
The pattern is old and very easy to knit but it is a lot of pleasure to knit it with this shining yarn. It feels good, ist is light and it looks very noble. I look forward to wearing this vest with the wide turtleneck.

Das große Strickbuch von Katharina Buss
Romantic Hand knits by Anne Modesitt

The dress fits really good and I hope it will not lengthen much because the yarn is very light and I knitted very tight. I will show the modeled dress soon, I swear.
I've begun with a cardigan from the same yarn because I wanted to have something that fits to the dress. I decided for a mixture of two Rowan-Designs: The shapes of Emmeline of Rowan-Magazine No. 28 and the Fair-Isle-Pattern of Helga of Rowan-Magazine No. 36. And together it looks like this:
Bis bald also...
I love this combination of bell-border and Fair-Isle-Pattern - what's your opinion? I knit the back and the fronts of the cardigan in one piece in order to avoid seams. At the moment I plan to knit the bell-borders at the sleeves, too, but with a smaller Fair-Isle-Pattern. The final design will form itself during the knitting, as it always does. See you later ...

Nachgereicht / Something to add
So the quiet days are gone already and the world is preparing the loud welcome of the new year. I don't like those bangs and will therefore only have a look at the fireworks from behind the window with a little bit of good music in order to make the noise outside more bearable.
This is perhaps an alternative:
My brother gave us an asian skyballoon as a christmas gift. It is a balloon out of rice paper which is filled with warm air by a little fire-ring. It goes up to 500m up in the sky. One may give up a wish with this balloon and you can see this light in the sky for a long time if you let it fly at a night without wind. It is a wonderful idea which is celebrated in asia by thousands of people at the same time.
We don't let fly the balloon on New Year's Eve but in a quieter night, I think.
Do you know this idea? How do you celebrate the coming year? In the classical way with fireworks or a bit quieter?
But before the year 2007 comes to it's end I've something to add which jumped off my needles in the last days before christmas.
First there are these socks out of Mega Boots Stretch of Lana Grossa and the pattern Diagonal Cross Rib Socks of the Interweave-Book "Favorite Socks". There are warm, stretchy and the colours are my taste.
... and now something new: I started with my dress I'd like to knit!
Inspired by the Rannoch Dress of Rowan Magazine No. 42 I already had an own idea of what kind of dress it should be. The colour should be red, indeed, my favourite. The yarn had to be not so expensive - if my purse would be thicker I'd rather choose Kid Classic of Rowan - but I looked for a substitute. I found it at Junghans Wolle with the quality "Melange", a blend of wool and artificial fibres which I used for the scarves for my nieces (click).
After that I looked for the right pattern in all my pattern books. I didn't want a bulky cable pattern because I don't have to emphasize my bust. At least I found my pattern in the book "Das große Strickbuch" by Katharina Buss (page 224). Only a bit of maths and I was ready to start.
Fortsetzung folgt ...
At first I made a provisional cast-on and knitted the blouse. Later I will pick up the stitches from the provisional cast-on and knit the skirt from the top down. The skirt will have 10 sections knitted in stockinette-stitch devided by "fake-seams" - one stitch is knitted in reverse stockinette stitch (I saw it at Eunny Yang's Tangled Yoke Cardigan" in Interweave Knits Fall 2007).
To be continued ...
