Flower Power

I finshed my Flower Power Vest yesterday morning - ready for an Easter walk!!!

Flower Power Weste / Flower Power Vest

Anleitung / Pattern:
Verena Magazin Winter 2009, Modell 1 von Karen Noe

Garn / Yarn:
Junghans Wolle Alpaka (discontinued)
100% Baby-Alpaka, 130m/50g
200g anthrazit, je 50g grün, hellgrün, dunkelrot, feuerrot, orange, pink, lila, hellgelb

Nadeln / Needles:
Addi Turbo 4mm

Änderungen / Modifications:
abweichende Farben, V-Ausschnitt anstatt Rundausschnitt, andere Maschenprobe
used different colors, V-neck instead of round neck, different gauge

This yarn was many years part of my stash. I had a lot of ideas what to make out of this yarn in the last years but never realized them. As I first saw this vest in the Verena magazine I knew from scratch: You'll make it from alpaka by Junghans Wolle. The yarn is so soft, has no knots and wasn't expensive to my taste. It really is a pity that it is discontinued.

This wasn't my first fair isle project though it was the first with real steeks that had to be cut.
By the time I had knitted about the half of the item I read in an old knitting book that fair isle made of alpaka yarn never go together. They said there that this combination has to end in a disaster when it is cut because alpaca is so slippery. Well, in spite of this I was ready to take the chance to finish this vest. And a s you can see it all went very well and the vest turned out beautifully instead.

Hier die Entstehungsgeschichte in Bildern: / Here are some pictures of the process:

... after knitting there are a lot of ends to sew in ...

... here you can see one of the steeks ...

... then there is work for my old sewing machine:
I sew four seams on each steek  ...

... now the first cut - it was a little crazy but I knew I could trust my secure seams ...

... the cut of the other steeks was routine then,
after that I secured the cuts again with ziczac seams ...

... then the fabric had a bath in water and tenemoll
and was then blocked on a big towel ...

... then I closed the shoulder seams and knitted the edges. Around the neckline, the front sides and the back there were 565 stitches per round ...

It was absolutely worth the effort: I am completely satisfied with the outcome and took the vest out on our Easter walk yesterday. It already is a favourite item in my wardrobe yet and the knitting of the flowers was great fun. This wasn't my last real fair isle project for sure - I just want to say: Knitting steeks and cutting them is really great fun!!!

And what is the next plan?
You won't believe it but nothing concrete at the moment. I think I need a little creative break now to put all my ideas in order. There are so many things that I like to do now., i.e. read a good book with passion, make some music, prepare our boat for the sailing season, outdoor activities. But I am sure it won't be long until I'll have some needles and a string between my fingers again. And there is soon my next visit to Düsseldorf when I hopefully will meet my knitting "sisters" and perhaps make a little purchase at the Wollduo. Until then there will be a new project on my needles for sure.

Bis bald also und ganz liebe Grüße / Until next time and best wishes
Susanne
