Wie ich zum Stricken gekommen bin? / What made me knit?

My mother showed me the first steps, knit and purl, not more. At that time I was about 8 years old and loved the work with two sticks and a string from the very beginning.

The very first project was a shawl - in garter stitch of course. Everybody seems to begin with that. Then followed clothes for my puppets: dresses, trousers, sweaters, shawls, caps, bed-covers and sleeping-bags as well.

Later - I was about 12 or 13 years old - I worked clothes for myself, my parents and for friends. Most of the patterns I invented by myself. But I also knitted sweaters from patterns out of knitting magazines and books.

At that time it was allowed to knit during some lessons in my school. Knitting was a part of it ... and it didn't minimize my achievement, that's my impression. I could concentrate much more on the spoken word with two sticks and a string between my fingers - and so do I today.

At our 20-years-jubile of our school-leaving exam in september 2006 a former fellow pupil confessed to me that she still remembers a kind of Norwegian sweater I worked at school. She loved it very much and wanted to have it for her own but she didn't dare to tell me at those school days. Unfortunately I gave the sweater away some years ago and I did not have any picture of the it at all.

The original sweater was a kind of royal blue with white icicles and christals in bluemetallic. The pattern came out of an issue of "Brigitte", the mohair yarn was a christmas present from my parents and the patter was a bit tricky: shortened rows, Norwegian technique, the christals - in short it was a real challenge for me as a 16 years old girl. You can imagine that I was very proud when the sweater was ready. The second knit of the same pattern wasn't really such a thrill as the first although the angora was more precious. The gold colour didn't fit to me. Here is a picture from the second sweater:

Knit and Relax eben.

Over 30 years (!) I didn't stop knitting at all.
After an exhausting day at the office with much work in front of a telescreen knitting is a perfect compensation. After all the "head-work" it feels so good to do something beautiful with the hands. That ist perfect relaxation ... Knit and Relax indeed.
